The committee said one of its members, Caroline Yorke's son, was the parent recovering from a gambling addiction. She said her son had sports betting problems in North Carolina and Colorado, where digital sports betting began two weeks ago. Yorke encouraged the committee to vote against the measure. In previous hearings, the committee heard from religious groups that encouraged the same action.
Cossert said funds for responsible gambling and problem gambling could be used, but they were not specifically stated in the bill.
One of the other questions from the commissioners is whether everyday fantasy sports are regulated. A bill that would have framed the DFS currently operating in the gray areas of the U.S. passed away at the General Assembly on Mar. 1. Since the first betting hearings in the House of Representatives this year, lawmakers have proposed including it in the sports betting bill. However, it has not been added yet.
